Brett Hotchkin

Brett started his professional career back in 1988 at an accounting firm based in Oak Park. From there, he moved to a few more practices before starting his own firm in 1996.

He successfully grew his own business ( B A Hotchkin & Associates) from a sole practitioner to a team of twelve.

Brett has a passion for driving business growth and his knowledge and guidance has helped many clients in a number of different industries from construction to professional service firms.

Outside of work hours, Brett enjoys watching his kids play football and netball. He also likes the thrill of racing cars.

John Hughes

After graduating from Melbourne University, John completed his chartered accounting qualification at Coopers & Lybrand (now PWC) working in audit services and taxation. He then worked at Bongiorno & Co before starting his own accounting practice in 1977.

John has assisted many clients using the knowledge and skills developed through ongoing professional development.

His main interest is in Self Managed Superannuation Funds (SMSF), having gained a sought after accreditation, the Specialist SMSF Adviser from CAANZ.  He is also a registered auditor.

In his spare time, he likes watching St Bernards Old Collegians Football Club, attending the horse races and participating in swimming events, both locally and internationally.

John Gregory

John was a graduate of Melbourne University (same class as John Hughes), before moving to Peat Marwick where he started his accounting career.

In 1988, John started his own practice and operated within the Essendon area for many years.

John has always had a very hands-on approach to his clients, working with them to achieve their financial and personal goals.  John is very well rounded in all areas of taxation including SMSF’s.

He is a huge fan of the Collingwood Football Club and has owned many racehorses in his time.  John also still plays tennis occasionally.

James Hughes

James graduated from Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT).  He then commenced work at KPMG as an accountant.

James then worked at Nexia (now Moore Stephens), Hughes O’Dea Corredig (for his father John Hughes) before moving and working with John Gregory.

His main interest is working with SME’s to grow their business through the use of technology.  This has been a particular focus in the past few years with clients seeing the positive impact cloud technology can have on their business.  Working with start-ups is also a passion of his.

His interests outside of work involve St Bernards Old Collegians Football Club and the Essendon Football Club.

Rodoulla Kyriacou

Rodoulla has a wealth of knowledge in taxation and accounting for small to medium entities. She has over 16 years’ experience in public practice.

Rodoulla’s role is to prepare financial accounts and income tax returns for clients across a number of industries and her focus is to always ensure the best outcome for clients.

Brodie Anderson

Brodie has over 11 years’ experience in public practice and in that time has gained experience across a range of industries.

During that time, he has demonstrated a commitment to his clients’ needs and timelines and clients appreciate his knowledge and expertise.

Brodie’s main role is the preparation of financial statements, tax returns, tax planning and assisting clients with technical advice.

Jing Liu

Jing has been working in public practice since 2000, with a focus on taxation,  accounting, business services and SMSF’s.  She enjoys solving problems and loves the challenges that her role brings.

Jing likes the variety of work and cares about the quality of work she produces.

When not at work, she loves to travel and catch up with friends. Music is a passion, listening to a wide range of genres.

Nicholas Hughes

Nick started his career as an insolvency accountant and then after 2 years made the move to business services and taxation for a further 4 years prior to joining Hotchkin Hughes.

Nick enjoys meeting client’s needs for a broad range of services from tax compliance, Self Managed Superannuation Funds, internal/management accounting and is always looking to expand his knowledge and skill set.

Outside of work Nick likes travelling, watching cricket and is a keen supporter of the Essendon Football Club and his local club, St Bernards.

Asad Abbasi

Asad has over 7 years experience as a professional services accountant in public practice.  During those years he has worked on all aspects of accounting, taxation and compliance work for a wide variety of clients and industries including self-managed superannuation funds.

Asad enjoys meeting with clients and attending to their business and taxation needs.

When not at work he loves surfing, cycling and played cricket at a national level before “retiring”.  He still enjoys playing cricket with friends.

Mitchell Leathers

Mitch began his professional career in 2017 at a small accounting firm in Yarraville whilst completing his Bachelor’s Degree at RMIT,  graduating in 2020.

Prior to joining us, Mitch developed a strong knowledge base with Self-Managed Super Funds and is now enthusiastically broadening that knowledge to include taxation and compliance work.

Outside of work Mitch enjoys heading away to the country as well as watching the AFL and NBA.

Pat O’Connell

Patrick completed a Bachelor of Commerce at the University of Melbourne and is currently completing his CA.

Patrick’s main focus is on taxation and business services, enjoying the opportunity to help clients achieve the best possible outcomes.

Outside of work Patrick is involved at St Bernard’s Cricket Club as both a player and Vice-President.

Michael Polzella

Michael started his Accounting Career in a Thornbury based firm in 2020 after graduating from La Trobe University.

Michael has built knowledge and experience with accounting, taxation and compliance over the years and continues to learn and develop as he is in the process of studying to become a CPA.

Outside of work Michael enjoys time with family, friends and watching sport.

Ghassan Hafez

Having completed his Bachelors majoring in Accounting at La Trobe University the year 2017, Ghassan went on to pursue a career in Accounting. With over 4 years of experience,

Ghassan has built expertise in income tax returns, and is equipped in preparing financial statements.

 Ghassan has a strong regard to maintain professional development, centralising his focus on building trusted relationships with our clients.

During his spare time, Ghassan enjoys exploring nature, attempting escape rooms, and spending time with his family 

Christina Cirona

Christina started her professional career in accounting in 2012 after graduating from RMIT and became a qualified Chartered Accountant in 2016.

After spending a number of years working as a tax accountant she made the decision to turn her attention to bookkeeping and joined Hotchkin Hughes, employed in our in-house bookkeeping division, specifically to provide a service to clients in need of assistance in this area.

With Christina’s solid accounting/tax background she is able to provide a unique level of knowledge over and above that normally provided at a bookkeeping level.

When not at work Christina loves trivia, attending concerts and watching movies.

Christel Van Der Burgt

Christel’s career started off in the Superannuation industry as a Funds administrator.  Then progressed into he IT Industry managing multiple projects for a number of Superannuation funds.  She has over 7 years experience as a bookkeeper working for Clients over multiple industries.  Christel is experienced in Xero, MYOB and Quickbooks.

Our Administration Team

We also have a wonderful team of admin staff consisting of:

Angela Buckley in Reception, the first to greet you at Hotchkin Hughes and always available to assist our clients and staff in any way she can;

Helen Swanson, looks after our ASIC and assists with all general administration matters as and when required;

Sarah Clarke, prepares and sends out our client newsletters and updates, has also assisted John Gregory for a number of years in all admin matters pertaining to his clients and now at Hotchkin Hughes.
